Learning How to Surf: 4 Tips for Success in the Water

Sometimes the hardest thing for beginning surfers is the initial embarrassment of not being good at the sport. Keep in mind that all good surfers had to start on the bottom rung, just like you. I do not know a single soul who paddled into the water for the first time and did not feel defeated and just plain bad about his or her ability. There is a steep learning curve, and the first month can be painful both physically and mentally, but remind yourself that everyone goes through it. You can not get better unless you experience being bad. So, it is not surprising that you will become very familiar with the virtue of humility. As you are out there in the lineup observing other people while you epic rides, in turn, paddle for a wave and falter, use that to your advantage. Consider your failures as something worth improving upon and try to understand what the good surfers are doing so that you can correct your technique. It is okay to feel completely uncoordinated as you lie there awkwardly, belly down, on the surfboard. It is better to be out there on the water than cooped up in your house or office wondering why you did not push yourself harder. Tip # 1: Once you go, keep at it for a month. The best way to get through the difficult beginning stage of your surfing career is to make it as short as possible. Try to dedicate a whole month to your pursuit of surfing. Get in the water every day no matter what the conditions are. Rain or shine, just get out there, paddle around a bit. You don not even have to catch a wave! The simple act of being on the water and trying will advance your ability is enough.

Once you begin paddling out to the same break day in and day out, people will recognize you and help you. Eventually, they may even wonder where you were if you missed a day and will keep you on track.

Tip #3: Observe advanced surfers, and learn from them.

There are also ways to learn how to surf when you are not even in the water! Pick up some good surfing videos and study them for your next session in the water. Take mental note of the areas your surfing could improve on, like how to stand on the board, when to pop up, how to duck dive, how to paddle effectively. Then paddle out and work on what you are having trouble with the most based on what you have seen. You can also learn a lot by observing surfers on the beach. Pick one or two that seem to be catching the most and best waves at that break. Then, analyze what it is they are doing that is effective. Maybe they are paddling longer or harder or popping up quicker. Maybe they know the right place to line up to catch the best waves and you do not yet. Observing other surfers is particularly effective if you are having trouble paddling into waves. If you are desperately paddling your heart out, but the guy three feet from you is catching every wave that comes by, you have some homework to do. Chances are that better surfers have better wave knowledge of your favorite spot, and their familiarity with the wave gives them an edge. Next time you are on the beach, watch them and find out what makes your local wave tick.

Tip #4: Observe beginning surfers, then critique yourself.

Likewise, you can learn what not to do. Countless times beginning surfers make mistakes that prevent them from properly catching waves. Sometimes they lie too far back on their boards or do not pop up soon enough. Other times, they seem heavy footed and not quick to respond to the conditions of the wave. Make a list of things that beginning surfers do wrong and strive to check your own mistakes off that list. Use it as a checklist when you paddle out each day. That, along with your list of what TO DO, will get you to the next level in no time!

Hope For Football “Widows” Everywhere

With the professional football season just about to begin, football “widows” everywhere will soon be ignored and / or cast aside, while their significant others turn into football “zombies”. You’ve no doubt hear the old expression, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em?”

And why not? With the millions of fans (women included) that football already has, there must be something to this game, right?

Don’t understand the game? Let’s face it, if you don’t understand something, you’re probably not going to enjoy it very much, and football is no exception. Bottom line….football really isn’t that complicated. Sure, it does have its own “lingo”. But learning football is no different than learning a new language and it takes time to learn. Tried asking your significant other questions about football? Forget it. Particularly when the game is on; you may as well be talking to the wall.

So where to start? How about with some of the following basics:

o An NFL (National Football League) team has 53 players; some play on Offense (unit that possession of the ball and is trying to score); some play on Defense (unit that attempts to stop its opponent’s Offense from scoring) and some play on Special Teams (units that are on the field for kickoffs, punts and field goals)

o At any given time, a team has 11 players on the field

o The Offense attempts to advance the ball past its opponents goal line and score touchdowns (worth 6 points) or move it into field goal range for its Kicker to attempt a field goal (worth 3 points)

o There are two type of plays - passing and rushing (running)

o An Offense has four plays (downs) to advance the ball at least 10 yards; if it does so, it maintain possession of the ball; if it doesn’t, it may have to give up possession to its opponent

o An Offense has 40 seconds (as indicated by the play clock) after the end of a play to start the next one, otherwise it incurs a penalty

o The amount of time a team has possession of the ball throughout the game is called its “Time of possession”; the longer, the better. This is critical, because if you don’t have the ball, you can’t score!

o When a team loses possession of the ball to its opponent, through an interception (throwing a forward pass that an opponent catches) or fumble (when the ball carrier loses possession), it commits a “turnover”. Turnovers can be the difference between winning and losing. Each time a team commits a turnover, it gives itself one less and its opponent one more opportunity to score

o Finally, when someone asks you the score of the game, remember to always say the name of the team that is winning or that has won first. For example, if the Bears are leading the Lions 14 - 10, say something like “The Bears are up fourteen to ten”, NOT “The Bears are winning ten to fourteen”. If the score is 10 - 0, say “It’s ten oh, Bears.” Notice the use of the word “oh”? If its 17 -17, say “It’s seventeen all.” Notice the use of the word “all”? Get the idea?

Continue (or start) to watch games. In particular, when watching on TV, pay attention to what is being said or shown. For example, if you see or hear the word “FLAG”, you will know that a player committed a penalty. Or, sometimes you will see the seconds ticking away on the play clock in the corner of your TV screen, indicating how much time the Offense has to start the next play. Remember, it has 40 seconds.

How about forming a “football club”? Women only, of course. You can watch the games together and pick each other’s brains. Remember, there’s safety in numbers.

Read whatever you can, i.e., on the internet, books, magazines, newspapers, etc.

Most of all, be patient! It’s not going to happen overnight. Trust me, in the end it will all be worth it.

PLAY BETTER GOLF RIGHT NOW!!

As a golfer I know how enjoyable the game can be. I also know how frustrating it can be. When it is going well, you hit good shots and make putts.

When it is going bad, golf can be torture! Am I right? Who among us has not wanted to snap a driver after missing a 100 yard wide fairway left or right out of bounds?? Who among us has not wanted to hurl their wedge after chunking a 90 yard shot 10 yards into a wide open green?? And who among us has not wanted to toss their five iron into the duck pond higher and farther than the tee ball we just rolled into said pond?? I can relate. Do you know why it gets our blood boiling? INCONSISTENCY!

Think about it. Your standing on the first tee and in front of the morning cadre at the public club you hit a laser straight down the middle say 280 yards. This is followed by a chorus of “Nice shot!”, “Great shot bud!” and the obligatory first pump from the other three in your group. This has happened to all of us. So why on the second tee do we hit a high banana fade into the dense pine trees? INCONSISTENCY!

Legendary golfer Ben Hogan would say the golf swing needs to be Consistant, Powerful, and Repeatable. CPR that’s right. Does your swing need CPR?

This is why most of us non-pros can experience these tremendous highs and dreadful lows. We then start to tweak our pre-shot routine, slow it down, speed it up, twist our heads, tee it high, tee it low, no tee at all you name it! When caught in a funk just about anything will make sense to a golfer with the shanks.

Quick story. A friend of mine ,2 handicap, was playing to qualify for the state amateur championship. His first two rounds were 75, 75 par was 72 and he made the cutdown to the last 18 holes prior to beginning match play. On the first hole he hit his drive off the toe of the club and the ball ended up in the rough. He went on to shoot 84!! After he told me that when he felt the ball on the first hole hit off the toe of his driver, he spent the rest of the round trying to “Fix his swing!” How could we sum up his third round?? INCONSISTENCY!

Now I realize a tight, consistent golf swing does not happen overnight, it takes practice and in most cases some outside assistance. Whether it comes from one of the numerous swing gadgets for sale today (some of which can be helpful.) Or, it can come from private lessons at the local club or from the friend or family member who actually has a clue. (If you know one of these people take advantage!) Then out to the range to hit buckets. The point is we are willing to try to fix our swings and find that elusive CONSISTENCY. Let’s face it, hitting a ball “On the screws” feels fantastic and when you can hit the sweet spot more often your handicap will reflect it, and your enjoyment of the game will increase exponentially.

Smash & Grab Wrasse

If you have never done Wrasse fishing then you’re missing out on some great sport. Multi-coloured Ballan Wrasse including the famous Cuckoo Wrasse hunts among the thick kelp and rock outcrops in search of its main food source crustaceans: such as crab, prawn, and other shellfish.

For this fish crabs and other hard shelled creatures don’t stand a chance with its famous thick lips and powerful jaws of shell smashing teeth. If this wasn’t enough it also has deep down in its throat another group of equally pharyngeal (throat) teeth designed to finally grind down its dinner.

Wrasse are found all over the UK coastline and in a diverse range of colours to suit the surroundings for maximum camouflage.

Although Ballan Wrasse isn’t the biggest fish in the sea you can’t tackle these bulky beauties on light rods and fine lines. It doesn’t matter if bait is suspended beneath a float or ledgered, you will have to use at least 12lb or 15lb line to stop the fish cutting your line with its teeth or breaking off on the rough ground.

As a general rule smaller fish will take worms, with a distinct preference for rag and lug however, Prawns, Mussels and Limpets are great for tipping off or bulking up the bait for bigger fish. For specimen hunting you would be well advised to use a bigger hook and use live hardback crab or at the least Peeler crab cut in half a bound onto a hook. Although there is a temptation to seek out the deepest gullies for the biggest fish which are all males believe it or not, it is a fact that very big fish will venture in to shallow water at all states of the tide!
Wrasse are active only in the hours of daylight. Prime time should be just as the sun comes up over the horizon and there is still some good depth in the water, because the fish will have spent the night fasting as they get ready for the days feed to begin.

Best methods for catching them is a simple ledger rig with a 2-3oz Weight and Ragworm threaded up a 1/0 hook. Cast out into Gullies and weedy features no further than 20yards out normally. They are hard up against the rocks! Keep your line tight and wait for the “Knocks” You must resist the urge to strike on the first bite. Usually it will be Bite! Bite! Bang! When you feel the rod tip go over strike and keep tension on the fish as it is going to head for cover in the weed or rocks. The rest is in the fight! Wrasse bashing is something all sea anglers should try.
You can land some monster hard fighting fish within inches from your feet. It doesn’t get much better than that!
